PMC 27

Stainless Powder Metallurgy Steel56-58Powder Metallurgy (PM)

Composition

Core alloying elements define the baseline trade-off between wear resistance, corrosion behavior, and toughness.

Material Overview

Razor steel by design. Very pure alloy, fine grained, good corrosion resistance. Takes very sharp edge thanks to very fine grain. Best performance with high polished, acute edge, it's a razor steel after all. This specific alloy is very close in composition with Sandvik 12C27 steel, however, it does benefit from PM technology, making it cleaner and further refining the grain. Unfortunately, PMC 27 is not available as a standalone steel, but only in combination with another Damasteel alloy RWL-34, the mix of those two making DS93x Damascus steel, which unlike usual pattern Damascus steels, is formed by mixing powders of those two steels(PMC27 and RWL-34) and then hot forming it.

Comparable Steels:

  • PMC27 ≈ 12C27 in composition and performance

  • PMC27 > AEB-L in corrosion resistance (slightly)

  • PMC27 ≈ AEB-L in sharpening characteristics

  • PMC27 < RWL34 in wear resistance and edge retention

  • PMC27 < CPM-S30V in edge retention

  • PMC27 < MagnaCut in overall performance

  • PMC27 > 440A in toughness and grain refinement

  • PMC27 is commonly paired with RWL34 in Damasteel DS93X and Damacore products.

Equivalent / Closest Steels:

  • Sandvik 12C27

  • Sandvik 12C27M

  • AEB-L

  • 13C26 (discontinued)

  • Nitro-V (similar use philosophy, though chemically different)
