MagnaMax is a next-generation powder metallurgy stainless steel released in mid-2025 as the highly anticipated successor to the famous CPM MagnaCut. Developed by metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas, it is engineered to be a high-performance version of MagnaCut that prioritizes extreme wear resistance and edge life.
Key Characteristics
"Stainless K390" Performance: Dr. Thomas describes MagnaMax as having the performance profile of non-stainless tool steels like K390 or CPM-10V, but in a fully stainless form.
Extreme Edge Retention: It features approximately 16% carbide volume—double that of MagnaCut—which provides drastically improved edge life, especially when cutting abrasive materials like cardboard.
Toughness vs. MagnaCut: To gain such high wear resistance, it sacrifices some toughness. It is roughly twice as tough as S110V but not as "bomb-proof" as the original MagnaCut.
High Hardness: It is designed to be heat-treated to an impressive 63–65 HRC.
Corrosion Resistance: It maintains the excellent rust resistance that made MagnaCut famous, making it nearly immune to corrosion in daily use.
Chemical Composition (The Upgrade)
While maintaining the "stainless" behavior of its predecessor, MagnaMax significantly increases key alloy elements to boost wear resistance:
Increased Carbon (C): For high hardness and more carbide formation.
Increased Vanadium (V) and Niobium (Nb): These create the hard carbides responsible for its massive edge life.
Common Applications
Spyderco Mule Team: The steel made its public debut on the MT46 Mule Team in August 2025, which included the first serrated Mule in the series.
Premium EDC Knives: It is currently being adopted by high-end manufacturers like Spyderco and New West KnifeWorks for blades where the user wants to go months between sharpenings.
Elite Kitchen Cutlery: Due to its ability to hold a very fine, thin edge while remaining food-safe and rust-proof.
