CTS BD1N is a high-carbon nitrogen-enriched stainless steel produced by the American company Carpenter Technology Corporation.

It is an evolution of the older BD1 steel and has become a favorite "performance value" steel, particularly for those who value extreme sharpness and ease of maintenance.

Key Characteristics

  • Nitrogen-Enriched: The "N" stands for Nitrogen. By replacing some carbon with nitrogen, Carpenter increased the steel's hardness and corrosion resistance without making it brittle. It typically reaches a hardness of 57–60 HRC.

  • Laser Sharpness: Much like the Swedish Sandvik 14C28N, BD1N has a very fine grain structure. This allows it to take a wicked sharp, razor-like edge that is excellent for slicing.

  • Outstanding Corrosion Resistance: It is highly resistant to rust and staining, making it an excellent choice for kitchen knives or EDC knives used in humid environments.

  • High Toughness: It is not a "chippy" steel. It can handle everyday tasks and light impacts very well without the edge breaking.

  • Easy to Sharpen: Unlike the "super steels" we recently discussed (like S90V), BD1N is very easy to sharpen. You can get it back to hair-shaving sharpness with very little effort.

Chemical Composition

  • Carbon (C): 0.85% – 0.95% (Provides good hardness)

  • Chromium (Cr): 15.00% – 17.00% (High level for great rust resistance)

  • Nitrogen (N): 0.10% – 0.15% (The key addition for hardness and stability)

  • Manganese (Mn): 1.00%

  • Silicon (Si): 1.00%

Common Applications

  • Spyderco Knives: It is a signature steel for Spyderco’s lightweight models made in the USA (e.g., the Para 3 Lightweight and the Manix 2 Lightweight).

  • Kitchen Cutlery: Highly popular for mid-to-high-end chef knives because it is food-safe, rust-proof, and easy to keep sharp.

  • Everyday Carry (EDC): Ideal for people who want a high-performance knife that they can easily maintain themselves.

Comparison: CTS-BD1N vs. 14C28N

These two are the biggest rivals in the "high-performance budget" category:

  • CTS-BD1N generally offers slightly better edge retention and can be hardened a bit higher.

  • 14C28N is generally considered to have slightly better toughness.
