A2 Steel (specifically AISI A2) is a high-carbon, air-hardening tool steel. It is legendary in the knife world for being a "heavy-duty" steel, sitting between the simple 1095 carbon steel and the more wear-resistant D2 tool steel.
Unlike most of the steels we have discussed recently (like AUS-10 or 440C), A2 is NOT a stainless steel.
Key Characteristics
Extreme Toughness: A2 is famous for its incredible impact resistance. It is much tougher than D2 or most stainless steels, making it nearly impossible to chip or snap under normal "hard use" like chopping or batoning.
Excellent Dimensional Stability: Because it is "air-hardening" (cooled in still air rather than quenched in oil or water), it is very stable during heat treatment, leading to fewer internal stresses and a very consistent blade.
Superior Edge Retention (vs. 1095): It holds an edge significantly longer than standard carbon steels like 1095 or 52100 because of its higher alloy content. It is typically hardened to 57–60 HRC.
Low Corrosion Resistance: With only about 5% Chromium, it will rust if not maintained. It is more rust-resistant than 1095, but it will still develop a patina and needs to be kept oiled.
Chemical Composition
Carbon (C): 1.00% (High carbon for hardness).
Chromium (Cr): 5.00% (Provides some wear resistance and helps with air-hardening, but not enough to be stainless).
Molybdenum (Mo): 1.00% (Increases toughness and hardenability).
Vanadium (V): 0.25% (Refines the grain for a sharper, stronger edge).
Common Applications
Hard-Use Survival Knives: It is the "gold standard" for brands like Bark River Knives, who use it for their famous bushcraft and hunting blades.
Combat & Tactical Fixed Blades: Used by makers like Chris Reeve (in older models) and Randall Made Knives.
Industrial Tools: Originally used for blanking dies, punches, and forming rolls where toughness and stability are critical.
A2 vs. D2
A2 is much tougher and easier to sharpen, but it rusts more easily and loses its edge faster than D2.
D2 is more wear-resistant and holds an edge longer, but it is more "chippy" and harder to sharpen than A2.
