14C28N Steel (specifically Sandvik 14C28N) is a high-performance martensitic stainless steel developed by the Swedish company Alleima (formerly Sandvik). It is widely considered one of the best "all-around" steels on the market, offering a world-class balance of toughness, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening.

Originally developed in collaboration with Kershaw Knives to improve upon the older 13C26 steel, it has since become the "gold standard" for high-quality budget and mid-range pocket knives.

Key Characteristics

  • Nitrogen Enhancement: The "N" in its name stands for Nitrogen. This special addition allows the steel to reach higher hardness (up to 62 HRC) while actually improving its rust resistance and toughness compared to standard carbon-only steels.

  • Extreme Toughness: It is exceptionally resistant to chipping or snapping, even when ground into very thin, high-performance edges.

  • Outstanding Corrosion Resistance: With 14% chromium and nitrogen, it is very "stainless" and holds up well in humid or coastal environments.

  • The "Joy" of Sharpening: Because it has a very fine grain structure, it is remarkably easy to sharpen to a "shaving-sharp" edge using standard tools, a trait often lacking in harder "super steels".

Chemical Composition

The chemical formula is carefully balanced to maximize performance without requiring a "premium" price tag:

  • Carbon (C): 0.62% (Moderate for hardness)

  • Chromium (Cr): 14.0% (High for rust resistance)

  • Nitrogen (N): 0.11% (The "secret sauce" for hardness and stability)

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.60%

Common Applications

You will find 14C28N in a variety of tools that demand reliable daily performance:

  • Everyday Carry (EDC) Knives: Used by popular brands like Kershaw (e.g., Blur, Leek), Civivi, and Ruike.

  • Kitchen Cutlery: Ideal for professional chef knives that require high hygiene and easy maintenance.

  • Outdoor & Fishing Knives: Highly valued for its ability to handle moisture and light-to-medium chopping without edge failure.
