CPM Rex 121 is one of the most extreme steels ever produced by Crucible Industries, engineered with very high levels of tungsten, vanadium, cobalt, and carbon. It can reach up to 70–72 HRC, making it one of the hardest knife steels in existence. This results in exceptional wear resistance and edge retention, far beyond most modern super steels. However, it is extremely brittle compared to balanced steels and requires careful handling. It is also non-stainless and very difficult to sharpen, typically requiring diamond or CBN abrasives. It is mainly used in niche high-performance or custom knife applications where maximum edge life is the only priority.
