CPM MagnaCut

Stainless Powder Metallurgy Tool Steel60–64 HRCCrucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM)

Composition

Core alloying elements define the baseline trade-off between wear resistance, corrosion behavior, and toughness.

Material Overview

CPM MagnaCut is a revolutionary stainless steel developed by metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas and produced by Crucible Industries using the CPM process. It was specifically engineered to break the traditional trade-off triangle between toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention. Unlike most stainless steels that compromise one property for another, MagnaCut achieves all three at a high level due to its optimized carbide design and low chromium carbide formation. It has quickly become one of the most respected “balanced super steels” in modern knife making.

Advantages

  • Exceptional toughness (best-in-class balance)
  • Excellent corrosion resistance (true stainless performance)
  • Strong edge retention
  • Excellent overall performance balance
  • Great for real-world hard-use knives

Disadvantages

  • Slightly lower edge retention than ultra-high vanadium steels
  • Premium cost
  • Can be harder to source in some production knives

At A Glance

CPM MagnaCut is a next-generation stainless steel designed to deliver a rare balance of high toughness, excellent corrosion resistance, and strong edge retention, redefining modern premium knife steel standards.
