Vanax (specifically Vanax SuperClean) is a high-nitrogen, high-performance "super steel" produced by Böhler-Uddeholm. It is widely regarded as one of the most technologically advanced steels in the world because it is virtually rust-proof while offering the edge retention of a high-end powder metallurgy tool steel.
Unlike traditional steels that use Carbon to achieve hardness, Vanax replaces a large portion of Carbon with Nitrogen.
Key Characteristics
Absolute Corrosion Resistance: Along with LC200N and MagnaCut, Vanax is considered chemically "immune" to rust in real-world conditions. You can use it in salt water, leave it wet, or cut acidic fruits without any fear of staining or pitting.
Elite Edge Retention: Unlike other rust-proof steels (like H1), Vanax does not sacrifice sharpness. It holds an edge significantly longer than S35VN and is comparable to M390 or S90V. This is due to the formation of extremely hard vanadium nitrides.
High Toughness: Despite its extreme hardness (60–62 HRC), Vanax is remarkably tough. It is less brittle than S110V or ZDP-189, making it resistant to chipping during daily use.
Low Friction/High Lubricity: The nitrogen-based chemistry gives the blade a very "slick" surface, which aids in slicing through sticky materials.
Difficult and Expensive: Vanax is one of the most expensive steels to source and one of the most difficult to heat-treat correctly, which is why it is usually reserved for very high-end or custom knives.
Chemical Composition
Carbon (C): 0.36% (Very low for a super steel)
Nitrogen (N): 1.55% (The "magic" ingredient providing hardness and rust immunity)
Chromium (Cr): 18.20% (High level for stainless properties)
Vanadium (V): 3.50% (Forms hard nitrides for extreme wear resistance)
Molybdenum (Mo): 1.10%
Common Applications
High-End Custom & Mid-Tech Knives: A signature steel for the brand Quiet Carry (e.g., The Drift and The Waypoint) and high-end makers like Shirogorov.
Marine & Saltwater Tools: The ultimate choice for people who live on the ocean but refuse to compromise on cutting performance.
Professional Kitchen Knives: Perfect for chefs who want the edge of a "super steel" but the zero-maintenance of a stainless blade.
Vanax vs. MagnaCut
Vanax generally has a slight advantage in pure corrosion resistance and is often considered to have a "slicker" cutting feel.
MagnaCut is significantly tougher and easier to sharpen, making it more popular for general hard-use EDC.
