What is the hardest steel for knife making?

There isn't a single "strongest" knife steel, as it depends on whether "strongest" refers to toughness, which is resistance to breaking, or wear resistance, which is how long it stays sharp. CPM-M4 and 3V steel are excellent for toughness, while high-vanadium steels like CPM S90V and CPM S110V offer superior wear resistance and edge retention, though they are harder to sharpen.  

For Maximum Toughness

  • 3V steel

    Highly tough, allowing it to take a very fine, low-angle edge and maintain it well. 

  • 80CrV2

    A carbon steel offering superior toughness and great edge retention, making it ideal for outdoor and hunting knives. 

For Superior Wear Resistance and Edge Retention 

  • CPM S90V

    High hardness and wear resistance due to its high vanadium and cobalt content, but it's expensive and difficult to sharpen. 

  • CPM S110V

    Also has superior edge retention but is extremely hard and can be almost impossible to sharpen. 

  • CPM-M4

    A high-performance alloy known for its excellent wear resistance and hardness, often used for demanding cutting tasks. 

Other Factors 

  • Carbon vs. Stainless: 

    Carbon steels generally offer superior toughness and sharpness, while stainless steels provide better corrosion resistance, making them suitable for various conditions.

  • Specialized Steels: 

    For professionals and collectors, powder metallurgy steels like M390 and S30V are considered excellent choices.
