Nitro-V is a high-performance martensitic stainless steel produced by New Jersey Steel Baron in collaboration with Buderus Steel.
It is a modified version of the Swedish AEB-L steel, enhanced with Nitrogen and Vanadium to create a more durable and corrosion-resistant blade for the modern knife market.
Key Characteristics
Wicked Sharpness: Like its predecessor AEB-L (originally a razor blade steel), Nitro-V has an exceptionally fine grain structure. This allows it to take an incredibly keen, "scary sharp" edge that is excellent for fine slicing.
Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: The addition of Nitrogen significantly boosts its resistance to rust and staining compared to standard 400-series steels or AEB-L. This makes it a great choice for humid environments and kitchen use.
High Toughness: It is remarkably resistant to chipping and rolling. It is much "tougher" than budget Chinese steels, allowing for thin, high-performance edge geometries.
Ease of Sharpening: Despite its performance, it is not a "super steel" in terms of difficulty. It is very user-friendly on the stones and can be brought back to a razor edge with very little effort.
Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to 58–62 HRC.
Chemical Composition
Nitro-V takes the classic AEB-L formula and "supercharges" it:
Carbon (C): 0.68% (For hardness)
Chromium (Cr): 13.00% (For rust resistance)
Nitrogen (N): 0.11% (Boosts hardness and corrosion resistance)
Vanadium (V): 0.07% (Refines grain structure and increases toughness)
Common Applications
EDC Folding Knives: It has become a favorite for "premium budget" and mid-range brands like Civivi, Ferrum Forge, and Sencut.
Professional Kitchen Knives: Favored by custom makers for thin "laser" gyutos and paring knives due to its stability and sharpness.
Tactical and Outdoor Knives: Used where a balance of toughness and low maintenance is required.

These two are very similar in performance:
Nitro-V is often preferred by custom makers because it is easier to heat-treat to a higher hardness.
14C28N is generally considered to have a slight edge in pure toughness.
