LC200N (also known as Z-FiNit or Cronidur 30) is a high-nitrogen, aerospace-grade stainless steel produced by Zapp Precision Metals. It is widely considered the modern successor to H1 steel because it is virtually rust-proof while offering significantly better performance as a knife blade.
Key Characteristics
Corrosion Immunity: Like H1, LC200N is practically impossible to rust. It was originally used by NASA for ball bearings in high-salt environments. It can be exposed to salt water, sweat, and food acids indefinitely without corroding.
Superior Edge Retention (vs. H1): While H1 struggles to hold an edge in plain-blade configurations, LC200N performs more like a high-quality conventional steel (comparable to CPM-S35VN or 154CM). It stays sharp much longer than H1.
Extreme Toughness: It is exceptionally tough and resistant to chipping. This makes it ideal for hard-use tasks where a brittle "super steel" might fail.
Easy to Sharpen: Despite its durability, it is very user-friendly on sharpening stones. It takes a very keen, "toothy" edge easily.
Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to 57–60 HRC.
Chemical Composition
The secret to LC200N is the use of Nitrogen to replace Carbon, which prevents the formation of chromium carbides that usually lead to rust. [11]
Carbon (C): 0.30% (Low, to prevent rust)
Chromium (Cr): 15.00% (High, for stainless properties)
Nitrogen (N): 0.50% (The "magic" ingredient that provides hardness and rust immunity)
Molybdenum (Mo): 1.00%
Nickel (Ni): 0.50%
Common Applications
Spyderco Salt Series: It has become the primary steel for modern Salt models like the Spyderco SpydieChef, SwayBack, and Tula.
Fishing and Maritime Knives: The best choice for professional fishermen and sailors who need a knife that won't rust but still cuts like a "real" knife.
Kitchen Knives: Popular for "worry-free" kitchen use, especially for cutting acidic fruits or working in humid environments.
LC200N vs. MagnaCut
LC200N is slightly more "rust-proof" (though both are effectively immune) and generally easier to sharpen.
MagnaCut offers better edge retention and higher toughness, making it the more "premium" choice for general EDC.
