H-2 is a high-performance, precipitation-hardened stainless steel produced by Myodo Metal in Japan. It was recently developed as the successor to the legendary H-1 steel.
Like its predecessor, H-2 is designed for one specific mission: to be 100% rust-proof in saltwater environments.
Key Characteristics
Total Corrosion Immunity: H-2 uses Nitrogen instead of Carbon in its matrix. Because it lacks the carbon that normally reacts with chromium to create rust, it is physically impossible for H-2 to corrode, even when submerged in the ocean or exposed to harsh chemicals.
Improved Edge Retention (vs. H-1): The primary reason for H-2's existence is to fix the edge retention issues of H-1. H-2 holds a sharp edge significantly longer than H-1, especially in plain-edge configurations.
Extreme Toughness: Because it is a relatively "low-carbon" nitrogen steel, it is incredibly tough and ductile. It is very resistant to snapping or shattering, making it safe for heavy-duty rescue or maritime tasks.
Work-Hardening: Like H-1, H-2 hardens during the manufacturing and sharpening process. However, H-2 has been engineered to reach a higher and more consistent hardness across the entire blade.
Chemical Composition
The exact formula is proprietary, but it follows the same logic as H-1 with modernized ratios:
Nitrogen (N): Replaces Carbon to provide hardness without allowing rust.
Chromium (Cr): High levels to provide a permanent protective oxide layer.
Nickel (Ni): Added for extreme toughness and further corrosion resistance.
Common Applications
Spyderco Salt 2 Series: Spyderco has begun transitioning its famous "Salt" line from H-1 to H-2. You will find it on newer models like the Salt 2 and the Atlantic Salt.
Professional Diving & Fishing: It is the premium choice for commercial divers, Coast Guard personnel, and offshore fishermen who cannot afford to have a tool fail due to rust.
Emergency Rescue: Used in safety cutters and shears that must stay sterile and rust-free in wet environments.
H-2 vs. LC200N
Both are rust-proof, but they serve different needs:
H-2 is slightly more tough and is the ultimate choice for serrated blades, which stay sharp for an incredibly long time due to high work-hardening.
LC200N generally offers slightly better edge retention for plain-edge blades and is a bit easier to sharpen to a fine point.
