CTS-XHP is a premium powder metallurgy stainless steel produced by the American company Carpenter Technology Corporation.
In the knife world, it is most famous for being described as "Stainless D2." It was designed to provide the extreme wear resistance and hardness of D2 tool steel while adding the high corrosion resistance of a true stainless steel.
Key Characteristics
The Best of Both Worlds: It combines the high-carbon "bite" and edge retention of a tool steel with the rust resistance of a high-chromium stainless steel.
Excellent Edge Retention: It is typically heat-treated to a high hardness of 60–62 HRC. It stays sharp for a very long time, outperforming S30V in many real-world slicing tasks.
High Corrosion Resistance: With 16% Chromium, it is very resistant to rust and staining. It is much easier to maintain than standard D2.
Good Toughness: Because it is made using Carpenter’s "Micro-Melt" powder metallurgy process, it has a fine, uniform grain structure. This makes it tougher and less "chippy" than traditional D2.
Takes a Wicked Edge: It is known for its ability to take a very thin, razor-sharp edge that feels "toothy" and aggressive when cutting through rope or cardboard.

Common Applications
High-End EDC Folders: It was a signature steel for Cold Steel (used in models like the Recon 1 and Code 4) and is frequently used by Spyderco (e.g., the Chaparral and various Techno models).
Custom Knives: Favored by many makers because it polishes well and provides high-end performance that users recognize.
Tactical Knives: Ideal for tools that need to stay sharp through heavy use without the risk of rusting in the field.
Comparison: CTS-XHP vs. D2
CTS-XHP is much more rust-resistant and tougher than D2.
D2 is significantly cheaper but requires more oiling and is more prone to chipping.
