CTS 204P is a premium powder metallurgy stainless steel produced by the American company Carpenter Technology Corporation.

It is functionally identical to the famous Austrian Böhler M390 and Crucible’s CPM-20CV. These three are often called "analogous" steels because they share the same chemistry and performance characteristics.

Key Characteristics

  • Extreme Edge Retention: Packed with high levels of carbon and vanadium, it holds a sharp edge for an exceptionally long time, even when cutting abrasive materials.

  • Top-Tier Corrosion Resistance: With 20% Chromium, it is one of the most rust-resistant premium steels available. It is highly reliable in wet, humid, or acidic environments.

  • High Wear Resistance: It is designed to resist abrasion, meaning the blade shape stays intact longer during heavy slicing tasks.

  • Fine Grain Structure: Because it is a "Micro-Melt" powder steel (Carpenter’s version of the CPM process), it has a very uniform carbide distribution. This allows for a very clean, sharp edge and a high-quality finish.

  • Moderate Toughness: While quite durable, it can be prone to micro-chipping if subjected to high-impact shocks (like hitting metal or bone), as is common with many high-carbide super steels.

Chemical Composition

  • Carbon (C): 1.90% (For extreme hardness)

  • Chromium (Cr): 20.00% (For superior rust resistance)

  • Vanadium (V): 4.00% (The source of its great edge life)

  • Molybdenum (Mo): 1.00%

  • Tungsten (W): 0.60%

Common Applications

  • High-End Production Knives: It was famously used by Spyderco (in various "Sprint Runs") and Zero Tolerance (e.g., the 0562TI).

  • Tactical Folders: Often used in premium knives where the user wants maximum performance and a high-tech "super steel" status.

Summary: CTS-204P vs. M390 vs. 20CV

  • Performance: They are identical. Any real-world difference usually comes down to the manufacturer's heat treatment and blade geometry.

  • Availability: CTS-204P is sometimes harder to find than M390 because Carpenter’s production runs are often smaller or more specialized for the US market.
