CPM-SPY27 is a premium powder metallurgy stainless steel developed through a unique collaboration between Spyderco and Crucible Industries.
The goal was to create a "Spyderco-exclusive" steel that offered a balanced performance profile—essentially a modernized, American-made alternative to the Japanese VG-10 and Swedish 14C28N.
Key Characteristics
The "Goldilocks" Steel: It was engineered to hit the "sweet spot" of knife performance. It offers better edge retention than VG-10, better toughness than S30V, and is easier to sharpen than many other "super steels."
Wicked Sharpness: Due to its fine and uniform grain structure (the "CPM" advantage), it can take an incredibly keen, razor-like edge that is very aggressive when cutting.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: With 14% Chromium and the addition of Nitrogen, it is highly resistant to rust and staining, making it a reliable choice for everyday carry.
User-Friendly Maintenance: One of its best traits is how easy it is to sharpen. While many high-wear steels are a chore to maintain, SPY27 behaves beautifully on sharpening stones.
Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to around 60–62 HRC.
Chemical Composition
The recipe was specifically tuned by Spyderco's engineers:
Carbon (C): 1.25% (For high hardness and edge life)
Chromium (Cr): 14.00% (For rust resistance)
Vanadium (V): 1.35% (For wear resistance)
Niobium (Nb): 0.55% (Refines grain and increases toughness)
Molybdenum (Mo): 2.00%
Nitrogen (N): 0.10% (Increases hardness and corrosion resistance)
Cobalt (Co): 1.50% (Strengthens the steel and provides edge stability)
Common Applications
Spyderco Exclusive Models: As the name suggests, you will only find this steel on Spyderco knives. It is easily identified by its Cobalt Blue FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handles on models like the Para 3 Lightweight, Native 5, and Delica 4.
Comparison: CPM-SPY27 vs. S35VN
CPM-S35VN generally has slightly better edge retention.
CPM-SPY27 is generally considered easier to sharpen and can achieve a slightly "keener" edge for precision slicing.
