CPM S125V is an ultra-high-alloy powder metallurgy stainless steel produced by Crucible Industries. It is widely considered the "final boss" of stainless steels and represents the absolute extreme limit of edge retention and wear resistance.
It is so difficult to work with that very few production companies use it, making it a rare and highly sought-after material for "steel nerds" and custom knife collectors.
Key Characteristics
The World Record for Stainless Edge Retention: With a massive 12% Vanadium content, S125V holds a sharp edge longer than almost any other stainless steel in existence. It outperforms S90V, S110V, and M390 by a significant margin.
Extreme Wear Resistance: It is designed to be virtually immune to abrasion. If you are cutting through miles of cardboard, thick rope, or carpet, S125V will keep cutting long after other steels have gone dull.
High Corrosion Resistance: With 14% Chromium, it is a true stainless steel. Despite its extreme alloy content, it resists rust and staining very well.
Extremely Low Toughness (Very Brittle): This is the major downside. S125V is exceptionally brittle. It has almost zero impact resistance and is highly prone to cracking, chipping, or shattering if dropped or used for anything other than pure, careful slicing.
A "Nightmare" to Sharpen and Machine: It is arguably the most difficult steel to work with in the world. It destroys grinding belts and takes hours to sharpen. Diamond abrasives are mandatory; standard stones will effectively do nothing to this steel.
Chemical Composition
The levels of Carbon and Vanadium are nearly unprecedented for a stainless alloy:
Carbon (C): 3.30% (Extremely high—more than most cast irons)
Chromium (Cr): 14.00% (For rust resistance)
Vanadium (V): 12.00% (The source of its legendary edge life)
Molybdenum (Mo): 2.50%
Cobalt (Co): Trace amounts to help with hardness.
Common Applications
Custom "Grail" Knives: Only a handful of elite makers (like Phil Wilson) specialize in this steel. It is usually ground very thin to maximize its slicing potential.
Industrial Tooling: Its original purpose was for high-wear industrial components like plastic injection feed screws that handle extremely abrasive glass-filled plastics.
Collection Centerpieces: Because it is so rare and difficult to produce, knives in S125V are often considered "performance trophies."
Comparison: S125V vs. S110V
S125V has even better edge retention but is much more difficult to sharpen and significantly more brittle.
S110V is the more "practical" extreme-wear stainless steel, as it is slightly tougher and more widely available in production knives (like Spyderco).
