CPM-M4 is a high-speed powder metallurgy tool steel produced by Crucible Industries. It is a modern improvement on the classic M4 high-speed steel, designed to provide a superior combination of high wear resistance and extreme impact toughness.
In the knife world, CPM-M4 is legendary for its performance in cutting competitions and as a high-end "workhorse" steel for folding knives.
Key Characteristics
Legendary Edge Retention: Because it is packed with high levels of Vanadium, Tungsten, and Molybdenum, it holds a "working edge" for an incredibly long time. It outperforms S30V, S35VN, and 154CM in pure edge holding.
High Toughness: Despite its high hardness, CPM-M4 is remarkably tough. It resists chipping and snapping much better than other high-wear steels like M390 or D2. This balance makes it the favorite for "chopping" competitions.
Extreme Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to 60–64 HRC. This allows the blade to be ground very thin while maintaining a stable, rigid edge.
Non-Stainless (Semi-Stainless): With only 4% Chromium, CPM-M4 will rust if not cared for. It is more sensitive to moisture than D2 or Cru-Wear. Many manufacturers apply a DLC or Cerakote coating to protect the blade.
Fine Grain Structure: The CPM process gives it a very uniform structure, allowing for an aggressive, "toothy" edge that bites into materials like rope and cardboard.

Carbon (C): 1.42% (High carbon for maximum hardness)
Chromium (Cr): 4.00% (For wear resistance, but not enough for rust protection)
Vanadium (V): 4.00% (Provides the extreme edge retention)
Tungsten (W): 5.50% (Increases toughness and heat resistance)
Molybdenum (Mo): 5.25% (Increases strength and hardenability) [12, 13, 14, 15, 16]
Common Applications
Competition Cutting Blades: Almost all "BladeSports" champions use CPM-M4 because it can chop through 2x4 lumber and still slice a rolling grape immediately after.
Premium EDC Folding Knives: A staple for Benchmade (famous on the Osborne 940 and Bugout variants) and Spyderco (Gayle Bradley models and various "Sprint Runs").
Hard-Use Fixed Blades: Ideal for knives that need to be both extremely sharp and physically durable.
Comparison: CPM-M4 vs. CPM-4V
CPM-M4 has higher Tungsten, giving it a slight edge in high-speed cutting and heat resistance.
CPM-4V is generally considered a bit tougher and slightly more resistant to chipping during heavy impact.
