What is CPM Cru-Wear Steel?

CPM Cru-Wear is a premium powder metallurgy tool steel produced by Crucible Industries. It is a modern, upgraded version of the original Cru-Wear and is designed to provide a "best-of-both-worlds" balance between extreme toughness and high wear resistance.

In the knife community, it is currently one of the most respected steels for "hard-use" tools.

Key Characteristics

  • Incredible Toughness: This is Cru-Wear's standout feature. It is significantly tougher than D2 and even outclasses many specialized stainless steels. It is highly resistant to chipping and breaking, even under heavy impact.

  • High Attainable Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to 60–65 HRC. This allows the blade to be very rigid and stable even with a thin, high-performance edge.

  • Excellent Edge Retention: Because of the high Vanadium and Tungsten content, it forms very hard carbides. It stays sharp much longer than standard steels like 1095, A2, or even 154CM.

  • Semi-Stainless: With about 7.5% Chromium, it is not a stainless steel. It is more corrosion-resistant than 1095 or A2, but it will develop a patina or rust if exposed to moisture or acids without proper care.

  • CPM Process Advantage: The Crucible Particle Metallurgy process ensures a very fine and uniform grain structure, which makes it easier to sharpen than traditional steels of similar hardness.

Chemical Composition

  • Carbon (C): 1.10% (For high hardness)

  • Chromium (Cr): 7.50% (For wear resistance and moderate rust protection)

  • Vanadium (V): 2.40% (For extreme wear resistance and grain refinement)

  • Tungsten (W): 1.15% (Increases "red hardness" and wear resistance)

  • Molybdenum (Mo): 1.60% (Increases strength and hardenability)

Common Applications

  • Hard-Use Folding Knives: A favorite for Spyderco sprint runs (e.g., Para 2, Manix 2) and Benchmade (e.g., the Adamas series).

  • Survival & Bushcraft Fixed Blades: Perfect for knives that will be used for chopping, prying, and heavy carving.

  • Industrial Tooling: Used for high-stress punches and dies where toughness is critical.

CPM Cru-Wear vs. MagnaCut

If you are looking for the "perfect" steel:

  • Cru-Wear is slightly tougher and holds a "working edge" very well, but it can rust.

  • MagnaCut has similar toughness and edge retention but is completely stainless.
