CPM 3V (produced by Crucible Industries) is a high-carbon, high-alloy tool steel designed to provide maximum toughness and wear resistance. It belongs to the same "V-series" family as 10V and 15V, but while those steels prioritize edge holding, 3V is engineered to be virtually unbreakable.
In the knife world, it is widely considered the king of hard-use, "bomb-proof" blades.
Key Characteristics
Extreme Toughness: This is 3V's defining trait. It is one of the toughest steels available for knife making. It can withstand extreme impact, prying, and heavy chopping without chipping or snapping. If you hit a nail or a rock while chopping, the edge is more likely to dent slightly rather than shatter.
High Wear Resistance: Despite its toughness, it still contains enough vanadium carbides to hold an edge significantly longer than traditional carbon steels like 1095 or A2.
Great Lateral Strength: It is highly resistant to bending and snapping, making it ideal for thin, high-performance fixed blades that need to survive brutal tasks.
Semi-Stainless: With 7.5% Chromium, it is not stainless. It is much more corrosion-resistant than 1095, but it will still rust or pit if left wet. It is often finished with a coating (like DLC or Cerakote) to help with protection.
Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to 58–60 HRC, though some makers run it higher (60–62 HRC) for better edge retention without sacrificing too much toughness.
