CPM-15V is an ultra-high-alloy powder metallurgy tool steel produced by Crucible Industries. It represents the absolute extreme of wear resistance and edge retention in the "V-series" of tool steels.
If CPM-10V is a marathon runner, CPM-15V is an ultra-marathon specialist. It contains the highest volume of vanadium carbides of any commercially available tool steel used in the knife industry.
Key Characteristics
The King of Edge Retention: With nearly 15% Vanadium, it creates a massive amount of hard vanadium carbides. It holds a "working edge" longer than almost any other steel in existence, outperforming 10V, S90V, and even M390 by a significant margin.
Extreme Abrasion Resistance: It is designed specifically for industrial applications where surfaces are subjected to severe wear. As a knife, it can cut abrasive materials (like cardboard, hemp rope, or dirty hide) for incredibly long periods.
Low Toughness: There is a trade-off for all that wear resistance. CPM-15V is relatively brittle. It is highly susceptible to chipping if it hits a hard object or is used for prying. It should only be used for dedicated slicing tasks.
Non-Stainless: Like 10V, it has only 5.25% Chromium. It is a carbon tool steel and will rust quickly if exposed to moisture. It requires constant oiling and maintenance to prevent pitting.
Extremely Difficult to Sharpen: This is one of the hardest steels to sharpen in the world. Standard ceramic or silicon carbide stones will struggle; diamond abrasives are mandatory for maintaining an edge on 15V.

Carbon (C): 3.40% (An incredibly high carbon content to bond with the Vanadium).
Vanadium (V): 14.50% (The highest in the series, providing legendary wear resistance).
Chromium (Cr): 5.25% (For hardenability, not for rust protection).
Molybdenum (Mo): 1.30%
Common Applications
Sprint Run Enthusiast Knives: Most notably, Spyderco released a famous series of 15V "Sprint Runs" (like the Shaman, PM2, and Manix 2) with heat treatment optimized by master bladesmith Shawn Houston (BigBrownBear).
Specialized Hunting Knives: Used for skinning large game where the user refuses to sharpen mid-task.
Industrial Components: Used for high-wear brick mold liners, powder compaction tooling, and industrial shredders.
