CPM-154 is a high-end powder metallurgy stainless steel produced by Crucible Industries.
It is the modernized, "CPM" version of the standard 154CM steel we discussed earlier. While they share the exact same chemical "recipe," the way they are manufactured makes a massive difference in performance.
The CPM Advantage
Standard 154CM is made using traditional ingot casting, which can result in a coarse, uneven grain structure. CPM-154 uses the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, where molten steel is "atomized" into a fine powder and then pressed into a solid block. This creates:
Uniform Carbide Distribution: The hard carbides are smaller and spread evenly throughout the steel.
Greater Toughness: Because there are no large "weak spots" in the grain, it is much more resistant to chipping than standard 154CM.
Easier Sharpening & Polishing: It takes a mirror polish more easily and is more consistent to sharpen on a stone.
Key Characteristics
Excellent All-Around Balance: It is often cited by custom knife makers as having the perfect balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance.
High Hardness: Typically heat-treated to 58–61 HRC.
Corrosion Resistance: It is a true stainless steel and is very reliable in wet or humid conditions.
Superior Edge Stability: It can hold a very fine, sharp edge even under hard use without micro-chipping.
Chemical Composition
Carbon (C): 1.05% (For hardness)
Chromium (Cr): 14.00% (For rust resistance)
Molybdenum (Mo): 4.00% (Increases toughness and edge holding)

Hunting & Fishing Knives: Highly valued for its ability to stay sharp through a messy task while resisting blood and water.
CPM-154 vs. CPM-S35VN
CPM-154 is generally considered easier to sharpen and can achieve a higher, mirror-like polish.
CPM-S35VN typically offers slightly better edge retention but can be more difficult to finish aesthetically.
