What is CPM-10V Steel?

CPM-10V (produced by Crucible Industries) is a legendary high-vanadium tool steel that, for decades, has served as the ultimate benchmark for wear resistance and edge retention.

Before the invention of modern "super steels," 10V was the undisputed king of staying sharp. It is part of the "V" series (alongside 3V, 4V, and 15V) designed for industrial applications that require extreme abrasion resistance.

Key Characteristics

  • Supreme Edge Retention: Due to its massive 10% Vanadium content, 10V creates a very high volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides. In edge retention tests (like the CATRA test), it consistently outperforms almost everything else on the market, including M390 and S90V.

  • Extreme Wear Resistance: It is designed to resist abrasion. If you are cutting abrasive materials like dirty rope, thick cardboard, or carpet, 10V will continue cutting long after other steels have gone dull.

  • Low Corrosion Resistance: With only 5.25% Chromium, CPM-10V is not a stainless steel. It is a carbon tool steel that will rust and pit quickly if not kept oiled and dry. It is even more sensitive to moisture than D2 or Cru-Wear.

  • Lower Toughness: Because it is packed with so many hard carbides, it is relatively brittle compared to steels like 3V or Cru-Wear. It is not a "chopper"; it is a "slicer." If used for prying or high-impact tasks, the edge is prone to micro-chipping.

  • Difficult to Sharpen: 10V is notoriously difficult to sharpen. Because the vanadium carbides are harder than standard sharpening stones, you generally need diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasives to work with it effectively.

  • Carbon (C): 2.45% (Extremely high to support the carbide volume)

  • Chromium (Cr): 5.25% (Mainly for hardenability, not rust resistance)

  • Vanadium (V): 9.75% - 10.0% (The source of its legendary wear resistance)

  • Molybdenum (Mo): 1.30%

Common Applications

  • Custom High-Performance Knives: Used by elite makers (like Phil Wilson) who specialize in "edge geometry" and hunters who want to skin multiple elk without stopping to sharpen.

  • Industrial Tooling: Used for high-volume punches, dies, and shredder knives where parts must stay sharp for thousands of cycles.

Comparison: 10V vs. 3V vs. 15V

  • CPM-3V: The "tough" brother. Much harder to break, but holds an edge for a much shorter time.

  • CPM-10V: The "balanced" high-wear brother. Incredible edge retention with moderate toughness.

  • CPM-15V: The "extreme" brother. Even more vanadium (15%), even more edge retention, but even more difficult to sharpen and more brittle.
