What is 9Cr18MoV Steel?

9Cr18MoV is a premium-grade Chinese high-carbon chromium stainless steel. It is the highest-performing steel in the "Cr" series (compared to 8Cr13MoV or 9Cr14MoV) and is widely considered the Chinese equivalent of the Japanese AUS-10 or a higher-end version of the American 440C.

It is highly respected in the knife community for offering "near-premium" performance at a very competitive price point.

Key Characteristics

  • Excellent Edge Retention: With a high carbon content of 0.9%, it can be hardened to 58–62 HRC. It holds an edge significantly longer than almost any other budget stainless steel.

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: The "18" in its name represents 18% Chromium, which is very high. This makes it exceptionally resistant to rust, staining, and corrosion, even in wet or salty environments.

  • High Wear Resistance: The addition of Molybdenum and Vanadium creates hard carbides that resist abrasion, meaning the knife stays sharp even after heavy use.

  • Fine Grain Structure: Despite its hardness, the Vanadium helps keep the grain structure small, allowing the blade to take a very keen, razor-like edge that is relatively easy to maintain.

Chemical Composition

  • Carbon (C): 0.90% – 0.95% (High carbon for maximum hardness).

  • Chromium (Cr): 17.00% – 19.00% (Very high for top-tier rust resistance).

  • Molybdenum (Mo): ~1.30% (Increases strength and prevents pitting).

  • Vanadium (V): ~0.12% (Refines grain for a sharper, tougher edge).
