440A Steel is the entry-level grade of the 440 stainless steel series. Among the three (440A, 440B, and 440C), it has the lowest carbon content, which makes it the toughest and most rust-resistant of the group, but with the weakest edge retention.
Key Characteristics
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Thanks to its high Chromium content and lower Carbon, it is highly resistant to rust. It performs very well in damp, salty, or humid environments.
High Toughness: Because it is less brittle than 440C, it can withstand impacts and lateral stress without chipping. It is "springier" and more durable for heavy-duty tasks.
Lower Edge Retention: With a hardness typically between 54–56 HRC, it will not stay sharp as long as 440C or high-end Swedish steels. You will need to sharpen it more frequently.
Very Easy to Sharpen: It is a dream to sharpen; even a novice can get a razor-sharp edge on 440A with very little effort.
