What is 420C Steel?

420C Steel (specifically AISI 420C or DIN 1.4034) is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel. It is a more carbon-rich variant of the standard 420 stainless steel, designed to achieve higher hardness and better wear resistance through heat treatment.

Key Characteristics

  • High Hardness: After proper quenching and tempering, it typically reaches a hardness of 54–60 HRC. This is significantly higher than the standard 420 or 420J grades.

  • Moderate Corrosion Resistance: Like other 420-series steels, it provides good resistance to fresh water, steam, and mild acids. However, it is not suitable for extreme environments like salt water or concentrated acids.

  • Excellent Polishability: It can be polished to a mirror finish, which further enhances its resistance to corrosion.

  • Budget-Friendly Performance: It offers a solid balance of strength and durability at a lower cost than premium "super steels" like M390.

Chemical Composition

The higher carbon content is what differentiates it from lower 420 grades:

  • Carbon (C): 0.43% – 0.50%

  • Chromium (Cr): 12.5% – 14.5%

  • Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.0%

  • Silicon (Si): ≤ 1.0%

Common Applications

Due to its high attainable hardness and sharpness, 420C is widely used for:

  • Professional Cutlery: High-quality kitchen knives, hunting blades, and pocket knives.

  • Surgical Instruments: Scalpels and other medical tools that require repeated sterilization and a razor-sharp edge.

  • Industrial Components: Bearings, needle valves, pump parts, and shear blades.

  • Consumer Goods: Lighters, ballpoint pen tips, and automotive wear parts.

420C vs. 420HC

You may see 420C and 420HC (High Carbon) used interchangeably by some manufacturers. Both are virtually identical alloys with carbon levels around 0.45%–0.50%. The primary difference is often branding; for example, Buck Knives is famous for their specific heat-treated 420HC, which performs similarly to high-quality 420C.
