154CM Steel is a high-end, American-made martensitic stainless steel developed by Crucible Industries. For many years, it was considered a "super steel" and was the industry standard for high-performance tactical and folding knives.
While newer powder metallurgy steels (like S30V) have since surpassed it, 154CM remains a top-tier choice for mid-to-high-end knives due to its excellent balance of properties.
Key Characteristics
Superior Edge Retention: Thanks to the addition of Molybdenum, it holds a sharp edge significantly longer than the 400-series steels (like 440C) or budget Chinese steels (like 8Cr13MoV).
High Hardness: It is typically heat-treated to a hardness of 58–61 HRC, making it very rigid and capable of maintaining a fine edge.
Good Toughness: Despite its hardness, it is not overly brittle. It resists chipping well, making it suitable for tactical and hard-use folding knives.
Great Corrosion Resistance: As a high-chromium stainless steel, it handles moisture and blood very well, though it is slightly less rust-resistant than the Swedish 14C28N.
Chemical Composition
154CM is essentially a modified version of 440C stainless steel with Molybdenum added to improve its performance:
Carbon (C): 1.05% (Very high; for excellent hardness and wear resistance)
Chromium (Cr): 14.0% (Provides strong stainless properties)
Molybdenum (Mo): 4.0% (The "key ingredient" that increases toughness and edge retention)
Manganese (Mn): 0.50%
Common Equivalents
ATS-34: This is the Japanese version of 154CM (produced by Hitachi). They are virtually identical in performance.
CPM-154: This is the powder metallurgy version of 154CM. It has the same chemistry but a much finer grain structure, making it tougher and easier to polish.
Common Applications
Tactical & EDC Folding Knives: It is a signature steel for brands like Benchmade (e.g., the Griptilian), Emerson Knives, and Protech.
Survival Knives: Used in high-quality fixed blades where a balance of durability and sharpness is required.
Surgical Tools: Used in high-end medical instruments that require extreme precision and rust resistance.
