1095 Steel is a classic, high-carbon non-stainless steel. Unlike all the previous steels we discussed (12C27, 420, 7Cr17, etc.), 1095 belongs to the 10-series of carbon steels, which contain no chromium for rust resistance.
It is arguably the most popular carbon steel in the world for heavy-duty survival knives and traditional pocket knives.
Key Characteristics
Excellent Edge Retention: Because of its high carbon content, it can be hardened to 55–60 HRC. It holds a sharp edge significantly longer than 420 or 3Cr13.
High Toughness: It is famous for its "impact resistance." It can take a beating—like batoning wood or prying—without chipping or snapping, which is why it's a favorite for survival gear.
Easy to Sharpen: Despite being hard, it is a "simple" steel (meaning no complex carbides). You can easily sharpen it to a hair-shaving edge in the field.
ZERO Corrosion Resistance: This is the "catch." Because it has almost no chromium, it will rust and stain very quickly if not maintained. It will develop a dark "patina" over time, and if left wet, it will pit.
Chemical Composition
The name 1095 comes from the SAE-AISI designation: "10" means it's a plain carbon steel, and "95" means it has 0.95% Carbon.
Carbon (C): 0.90% – 1.03% (High carbon for hardness)
Manganese (Mn): 0.30% – 0.50% (Increases toughness)
Chromium (Cr): 0% (This is why it is not stainless)
Common Applications
Survival & Bushcraft Knives: Used by legendary brands like ESEE (e.g., ESEE-3, ESEE-4), Ontario Knife Company (the RAT series), and Ka-Bar (the famous USMC Fighting Knife).
Traditional Pocket Knives: Used by Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC) for a vintage look and feel.
Machetes & Swords: Because of its balance of hardness and "springy" toughness.
Files and Springs: Its industrial-grade heritage.
Maintenance Tip
If you own a 1095 blade, you must keep it oiled (using mineral oil or specialized knife oil) to prevent rust. Many manufacturers also coat the blade in powder or epoxy to protect the steel.
