What does CPM stand for in knife steel?

In knife steel, CPM stands for Crucible Particle Metallurgy, a proprietary process developed by Crucible Industries that produces high-alloy steel with superior properties. This Powdered Metallurgy (PM) process creates a more uniform and homogeneous steel with a finer, more evenly distributed carbide structure, resulting in greater toughness, wear resistance, and durability compared to conventionally produced steels.  

How CPM Works

  1. Powder Creation: Elemental or alloy powders are mixed and then melted. 

  2. Atomization: These molten materials are subjected to a process that creates tiny, uniform beads of steel. 

  3. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP): The powder is then pressed and heated under high pressure, creating a dense and dimensionally stable product.
