Developed in the Idaho Falls workshop, this knife's distinctive shape and features are rooted in a sharpening test that inspired its creation.
TOPS has long been recognized for utilizing the full creative potential of its team, not just the official designers. The Upswarm is a perfect example, conceived by Eric Mooney, a grinder at the company. Mooney’s idea stemmed from observing how paper curls during cutting tests, sparking the idea for a compact trailing point blade with an exaggerated curve in relation to its 3-inch length.
True to its tactical roots, the Upswarm is designed to be functional in high-stress situations. The blade can be ordered with a sharpened swedge (depending on local laws), making it an even more formidable tool. Crafted from 1095 carbon steel — a durable and dependable material that has long been a staple at TOPS — the Upswarm offers a choice of a full DLC coating for added protection or a camo finish for those seeking a more stealthy aesthetic.
The handle is just as thoughtfully designed as the blade, featuring a mid-arc shape and three large finger grooves for a secure and ergonomic grip. One of the most intriguing features is the half-ring at the butt end, reminiscent of a karambit finger ring. This provides similar orientation benefits without the risk of getting caught in a full loop, making the Upswarm ideal for close-quarters self-defense.
For added durability, the handle scales are made from black canvas Micarta, and the knife comes with a Kydex sheath. Weighing in at 6.3 ounces with the sheath, the Upswarm is a practical and tactical companion for those who value compact, versatile tools.
