As the ultimate expression of Leatherman’s best-selling multi-tool,the Wave Alpha represents a bold leap forward—crafted around real user feedback,premium materials,and refined ergonomics.We sat down withSr.Product Manager Jackson Wang,who spearheaded the development of the Wave Alpha,to learn more about the inspiration behind the design,how the team turned fan requests into reality,and how they elevated one of the best multi-tools ever to new heights.
What Did“The Ultimate Wave Experience”Mean to You and Your Team?
Wave Alpha was always about our loyal customers and understanding their evolving needs.We launched the Original Wave in 1998,gave it a major overhaul in 2004,and made a few updates in 2018.It’s been our best-seller,and over the years,we’ve been constantly striving to improve its design.As a car enthusiast,I see the Wave as our Toyota Land Cruiser—an iconic nameplate with a devoted fanbase that’s truly irreplaceable.The Wave Alpha is our way of celebrating our fans,co-developing with them,and bringing it all to life at our factory in Portland,Oregon.
What Were the Most Impactful Pieces of User Feedback That Shaped the Wave Alpha?
Three main themes emerged from fan feedback and became the top priorities for this project:
• Largest and Most Comfortable Scissors:Fans wanted the biggest,most comfortable scissors possible.
• Enhanced Comfort and Grip:They asked for more comfort,better grip,and the elimination of pinch points and hot spots.
• Stronger Blade:They wanted a stronger blade made from the best knife steel available.
We gathered this feedback directly from consumers,through online reviews,by observing trends in the aftermarket,and via forums,Facebook groups,and subreddits.Our fans were eager to engage with us,and even though the product details leaked before the official release,the excitement in the market was palpable.
Blade Design:Safety,Performance,and Comfort
The ARC is our flagship product,and we learned a lot about knife design and MagnaCut steel through its development.For the Wave Alpha,we focused on three key aspects:Safety,Performance,and Comfort.We ultimately chose a reverse-tanto blade with a flat-sabre grind profile.This design minimizes high-tipping,ensures comfort when the blade is stowed,and provides better leverage and control when using the knife or any other tool.
Redesigning the Perfect Scissors
Early in the project,it became clear that none of our existing scissors would fit the Wave Alpha.With a clean slate,I challenged the team to maximize the cutting edge,fill the outside slot as much as possible,and make the handle as comfortable as it could be.We studied consumer usage patterns,analyzed competitors’offerings,and even looked at full-size scissors to understand the fundamentals of good scissor design.I’m thrilled with the result,and the team did an amazing job.As an added touch,we designed the fixed-half contour to match the knife blade when stowed,enhancing the overall product design.
Aesthetics&Material Choices
Topo-Textured G10 Handles:A Modern Twist
Wave Alpha is the first Leatherman tool to feature topo-textured G10 handles.Ergonomics was our top priority,and we knew the handles needed to be dimensionally contoured for control and comfort.One of our target use cases was overlanding,and a topography-inspired design really stuck.The final handle design is not only comfortable but also offers a modern and timeless take on the Wave’s iconic shape.
Distinctive Colorways:Cascadia,Obsidian,Canyonland
Choosing colors is always a challenge,but it’s also a lot of fun.Obsidian is a follow-up to our hugely popular Arc Obsidian Limited Edition(2024),which received overwhelming positive feedback.Cascadia pays homage to the colors of the Pacific Northwest,evoking a sense of journey and adventure.Canyonland,inspired by the sun hitting the sandstone formations of the American Southwest,is a high-visibility color perfect for those who need a quick visual ID of their tool—think of someone hunting and needing their multi-tool to stand out from the natural surroundings.We’re already exploring future colorways and welcome feedback from our fans to help shape what comes next.
User-First Engineering
Deciding Which Tools to Keep,Improve,or Replace
This was a direct result of our interaction with fans.Through surveys,interviews,and observations,we identified the tools that were most frequently used.We focused on improving those.Some changes were significant,like the new outside scissors and knife blade.Others were more subtle,such as adding thumb holes to the saw and file for one-handed operation.Some tools were left as-is because they were already perfect.The toughest decision was what to replace the inside scissors with.In the end,the fans voted for an awl with an eyelet,even though I personally preferred something else.But this tool isn’t designed for one person—it’s designed for our fans.
Overcoming Engineering Challenges
The biggest challenge was designing the scissors.We wanted a spring that stayed in place and popped open when fully deployed.The two scissor halves couldn’t overtravel or bypass each other when squeezed,and they had to stow flush against the tool.Of course,cutting performance had to be superb.Meeting all these requirements was no easy feat,but a closer look reveals the clever engineering that ensures every detail is perfect.

The ARC is our halo product.If you’re looking for an EDC showpiece that’s fidgety and clicky,with all tools one-hand operated,smooth to open,and accessible from the outside,and with even fewer pinch points,then the Arc is for you.If you’re a heavy multi-tool user,the Arc is hard to beat.But if you’re drawn to the Wave Alpha’s design and want something rugged and durable,the Wave Alpha is a fantastic choice.It’s tough to choose between them,but you really can’t go wrong with either.
