Chinese handmade pocket knife brand Sao Tools has completed a new batch of its "Little Elephant" （小象） model — this time in a distinctive checkered grid pattern affectionately nicknamed "corn," and for the first time in a double-blade configuration. The run began as a custom commission from a French cinematographer, whose choice of material would end up surprising even the maker himself.
"Rotten Lemon" Bone Turns to Jade
The French client selected so-called "rotten lemon" bone （烂柠檬骨） — aged bone with a naturally mottled, uneven yellow patina. Founder Max Sao openly admits he doubted the irregular material could produce a handsome handle. The result after polishing, however, astonished him: the finished scales take on the character of an ancient jade bi disc, with speckled color seeping softly through the surface — a quietly archaic, almost museum-like quality.
A sister variant in "rotten banana" bone （烂香蕉骨）, by contrast, evokes a miniature ornamental corn cob — a playful, warmly yellow interpretation of the grid pattern.
The Hidden Labor of a Double Blade
Behind the visual charm lies an assembly process far more demanding than the single-blade version. A single-blade knife requires achieving "three-level flush" （三平） alignment; the double-blade Little Elephant demands that each of the two blades be trued individually — and that the two back springs be leveled with each other as well. "I'd get the spear-point blade perfectly flush, then tune the coping blade — only to discover the springs had gone uneven," Max Sao recounts. "Then it's disassemble, adjust the higher one; overdo it, and it's disassemble and raise it back again."
The blades bear the maker's signature etch, "Max Sao."
Production Notes and What's Ahead
The workshop confirms that progress has fallen behind schedule — the summer heat, the maker insists, is entirely to blame. Elephant and Little Elephant orders are now expected to wrap next month, ahead of Soory in August and Shilin （士林） in September. Queued behind them for assembly and tuning: the "Sao Jump" （骚跳）, the "Mutant" （突变体）, and the "Modern Viper" （现代毒蛇）.
