Both LC200N and H1 are elite, nitrogen-based "rust-proof" steels used primarily in the Spyderco Salt series for marine and high-corrosion environments. While both are functionally immune to rust in standard saltwater conditions, H-1 offers the absolute maximum theoretical corrosion resistance, whereas LC200N provides a more practical balance of stain resistance and cutting performance.

Corrosion Resistance Comparison

  • H-1 Steel: Considered the gold standard for being 100% corrosion-proof. It uses a high amount of nitrogen and virtually no carbon, making it chemically unable to rust through traditional oxidation. It is the ideal choice for long-term submersion in saltwater or for tools kept on dive harnesses.

  • LC200N Steel: Extremely close to H-1, often cited as having 90–95% of its corrosion resistance. It was originally developed by NASA for ball bearings in high-stress, corrosive environments. For 99% of users, including those in heavy saltwater use, it will never show signs of rust.

Recommendation for Use

  • Choose LC200N for a daily carry (EDC) knife that will be exposed to sweat, humidity, or occasional saltwater. It holds a usable edge much longer than H-1, making it a better general-purpose tool.

  • Choose H-1 (specifically with serrations) for a dedicated rescue, dive, or boat knife that will spend its life wet and salty with minimal maintenance. The work-hardening nature of H-1 means the grinding of serrations actually makes those areas harder and better at holding an edge than the plain version.
