H2 steel is slightly better than H1 steel because it features a refined chemical composition that offers improved corrosion resistance and marginally better hardness. However, in real-world everyday use, they perform so similarly that most users cannot tell them apart.
The Core Difference
Spyderco transitioned from H1 to H2 purely because of supply chain disruptions in Japan. Instead of just replicating the old formula, they worked with Japanese steel manufacturers to upgrade the alloy.
H1 Steel: A nitrogen-based, austenitic stainless steel that is entirely rust-proof in saltwater. It is not traditionally heat-treated; instead, it gains its hardness through cold-rolling and work-hardening.
H2 Steel: The direct successor. It lowers the carbon content (from 0.15% down to 0.09%) to further remove any risk of rusting, while bumping up elements like molybdenum to enhance hardness and toughness.

Critical Performance Tip: Go Serrated
Both H1 and H2 steel have a reputation for poor edge retention on standard, plain-edge blades. Because these steels work-harden during manufacturing, they perform exceptionally well as serrated blades. A fully serrated H1 or H2 blade will hold its edge incredibly long, outcutting many traditional steels.
Which One Should You Buy?
Buy H2 if you are purchasing a brand-new knife today (such as a newer Spyderco Salt series model). It is the current production standard.
Buy H1 without hesitation if you find a good deal on a discontinued or used model. You will not lose out on any noticeable real-world performance.
If you are looking for an all-around "super steel" that doesn't rust but has much better plain-edge life, you might want to look at CPS-MagnaCut or LC200N instead.
